Mick Appleby

Mick Appleby is one of Britain’s most respected trainers, renowned for his success on the All-Weather circuit and his ability to get the best out of every horse. Originally from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Mick’s passion for racing began with his grandfather, who introduced him to the sport at local tracks like Pontefra

About Mick Appleby

Early Career

  • Started as a stable jockey for John Manners, riding numerous winners over three years.
  • Progressed to head lad roles with Roger Curtis and later at Andrew Balding’s Kingsclere Stables, where he worked with top-class horses and honed his training skills.

Training Career

  • Went out on his own in 2010, saddling his first winners and quickly building a reputation.
  • By 2011, he had 20 winners, and in 2014, he achieved his first Group race victory with Danzeno in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle.
  • Other notable wins include the November Handicap at Doncaster with Art Scholar and the Scottish Sprint Cupwith Demora.

Achievements

  • Multiple-time All-Weather Champion Trainer, dominating at Southwell.
  • Known for producing consistent winners year after year, with standout seasons like 2018, when he trained 94 winners and earned over Β£930,000 in prize money.
  • Recently gained international recognition by sending Big Evs to win the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in the USA (2023).
  • Group 1 Success with Big Mojo when winning the Group One Sprint Cup at Haydock

Training Ethos

Mick prides himself on maintaining the highest standards of horse welfare and creating a welcoming environment for owners. His base at Langham Racing Stables, near Oakham, Rutland, is home to a strong team combining youth and experience.
